About Us

Atelier on john is the shared vision of Tim Badgley and Dean Howlett, two designers whose work has shaped homes, shops, and spaces both locally and far beyond. With over 65 years of combined experience, they have built a reputation for thoughtful, timeless interiors and a level of care that keeps clients coming back year after year.

Their work has been featured in publications including Canadian LivingHouse & HomeArabellaChocolat, and Century Home, and has taken them into homes across Canada and internationally. While they have renovated and designed a range of commercial spaces, it is residential work that remains at the heart of what they do, creating homes that feel personal, layered, and meant to be lived in.

Atelier on john brings that experience together across two spaces on John Street. The shop at 46 John offers a carefully considered retail selection, while 24 John is home to their design studio and workroom. Here, clients can explore an extensive range of fabrics and wallcoverings, including Kravet, Cole & Son, Kravet Couture, Stout, Fabricut, Designers Guild, Trend, JF Fabrics, Osborne and Little, and more.

Together, these spaces reflect everything Tim and Dean are drawn to: well-made pieces, interesting history, and design that balances beauty with comfort. The shop features a thoughtful mix of antiques, vintage finds, and contemporary home goods, while the studio supports the custom work and detailed process behind each project.

Over the years, their work has been recognized with numerous honours, including the Canadian Choice Award for Home Décor, the Chamber Business Excellence Award for Hospitality and Tourism, and a civic award acknowledging their ongoing philanthropic contributions to the community. That connection to Port Hope remains central to everything they do.

More than anything, Atelier is a reflection of how Tim and Dean like to work: collaboratively, thoughtfully, and with a genuine interest in the people they are designing for. It is a place to gather ideas, explore possibilities, and create spaces that feel distinctly your own.

"Atelier on john is about reflecting your personal style."
